REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

STEM CELL INJECTION: a promising tissue-regeneration technique

Regenerative medicine is a new branch of medicine that aims to use stem cells to cure or prevent organ tissue damage or aging. Stem cells are found in several places in the body, including fat and bone marrow. However, this technique is not practiced in CANADA, ask Dr Coeugniet about eventual alternatives.

This emerging branch of medicine, which has already seen many successful cases, is based on cell therapy. After light liposuction (or aspiration of the marrow from the iliac bone) is done, fat stem cells are removed, prepared in a multi-step procedure and reinjected at the desired location, generally in an area of aging skin or an inflammatory or degenerative lesion caused by osteoarthritis or tendonitis.

One of the first successful stem cell injection cases involved the regeneration of a patient’s damaged heart tissue. Many other scientific publications now suggest they are effective in other areas and have repair and anti-aging applications.

Although this technique’s effectiveness isn’t yet formally proven, it is increasingly popular with patients who are highly concerned about their image.

FAT REINJECTION (lipofilling, fat transfer, fat grafting)
PRP
STEM CELL INJECTION IN THE FACE
FACE AND NECK LIFT WITH STEM CELLS OR PRP

Dr. Coeugniet has extensive expertise in global and multimodal facial rejuvenation and is one of the few plastic surgeons in Canada – and even the world – who performs facial rejuvenation using stem cells. Various procedures can be performed in combination, including a fat transfer or a face and neck lift. These cutting-edge techniques truly rejuvenate the face and regenerate the quality of the skin on your cheekbones, lips, neck or any other part of your face.

What do these procedures involve?

PRP is a platelet concentrate sourced from a simple blood test used for aesthetic purposes as well as to repair damaged tissue.

Stem cell injection is comparable to fat transfer, with which it can be paired, except that it involves the extraction of stem cells from fat using specialized methods. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia and typically takes two hours if not paired with another surgery, such as a face and neck lift. It has multiple regenerative or aesthetic medicine indications.

In the case of fat transfer (lipofilling), a small amount of fat is removed from the patient, then reinjected after preparation at the desired location, where imperfections are located.

Whether they involve PRP, stem cell injection or fat transfer, these procedures are non-invasive or minimally invasive, except in cases where they are paired with surgical procedures.

What will happen in the days after the procedure?

Bruises may appear. Swelling will also occur and last up to two weeks.

Is a recovery period required?

In the case of simple injections, recovery time is short. You can return to work one week after the procedure, or even after a weekend. Side effects are quite rare. You may experience slight pain and transient edema may occur in some cases or, exceptionally, bruises. The same symptoms may occur at the sampling sites (lower back, abdomen and thighs).

In the case where surgeries are paired with injections, the surgeries naturally determine the length of recovery. See the Surgical Procedures tab for more information.

GENITAL REJUVENATION

Combined with a fat transfer (lipofilling) of the labia majora or a PRP treatment, the injection of stem cells helps to regenerate this important part of the body by lending it a younger, more toned appearance.

What does this procedure involve?

Genital rejuvenation with stem cells is comparable to fat transfer, with which it is the most often paired, except that it involves the extraction of stem cells from fat using specialized methods. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

How long does the procedure take?

It takes one to two hours.

What will happen in the days after the procedure?

Except high-impact sports and horseback riding, all other activities are permitted. You’ll experience transient swelling and slight pain for which medication will be prescribed.

Is a recovery period required?

Typically, no. However, your situation will be assessed based on the nature of your work.

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE FOR OSTEOARTHRITIS AND TENDONITIS ISSUES

Stem cells can also be used for so-called degenerative or inflammatory problems, as well as for osteoarthritis and tendonitis. Dr. Coeugniet can provide more information on this topic and determine if such a procedure is indicated in your case.

REGENERATIVE MEDICINE AND BALDNESS

Stem cell injection or PRP can accompany a hair transplant or treat baldness in men or women on their own. Feel free to ask Dr. Coeugniet for more information.
