Breast reconstruction

After having had a mastectomy, most women feel the need to have their breasts rebuilt in order to feel feminine again. It is also an often very emotional process for women, who celebrate their victory in the face of the disease.

Mastectomy is an intervention that has a significant personal and psychological impact on the patient. Very often it is an upheaval in one’s life. Breast reconstruction allows the patient to restore the integrity of her body image.

The surgeon must be specialized in breast reconstruction in order to offer patients all the possible recent techniques. If you are considering this procedure, rest assured: we will listen to you and discuss with you the surgery that will allow you to have breasts that meet your expectations.

THE INTERVENTION

Reconstruction is a personal choice, and the qualified plastic surgeon will choose with his patient the best solution. The shape and volume of the breast will be restored, and the nipple and areola will be reconstructed. If necessary, a symmetrization of the opposite breast will be accomplished. There are several possible techniques.

Reconstruction is never mandatory, and the use of an external prosthesis may be sufficient for some women. Other techniques are more sophisticated and include the production of flaps that are taken from the patient’s tissues. Breast shape and volume are restored.

During your first meeting, we will determine with you the best technique to use, and we will give you more information about this surgery, which is usually performed in a hospital.

Should you have breast reconstruction after breast cancer?

Breast reconstruction is not compulsory after breast cancer. This intervention helps to reduce and sometimes erase the physical traces of the disease. Performing breast reconstruction surgery after breast cancer allows women to reclaim their body and femininity.

How many interventions are needed?

Breast reconstruction may require 2 or 3 procedures. The first aims at rebuilding the volume of the breast. The second intervention aims at harmonizing the 2 breasts in order to improve aesthetics. The third, which depending on the case can be achieved at the same time as the second, involves reconstructing the areola and nipple area.

Can breast reconstruction be done immediately after cancer surgery?

The two protocols are possible according to very precise criteria: the nature of the pathology of the breast, the treatments considered and, of course, what the patient wishes. This decision is discussed between the medical teams, and then with the patient.

What are the obtained results?

Breast repair surgery is now giving very good results. The goal is to get as close as possible to the original breast, with of course scars. The decision to have breast reconstruction will allow the patient to consider a new start in her personal, emotional, social and professional life.

What is the follow-up to a reconstruction intervention?

Hospitalization for breast reconstruction varies between 4 and 8 days depending on the planned surgery. Domestic activities should be moderate and stopping sport is imperative for 2 months.
