Breast augmentation - also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that increases the size, shape, or fullness of the breasts. Depending on the recommendation of the surgeon and the patient’s aesthetic goals, the procedure may use breast implants or the patient’s own body fat.
Breast augmentation is the most frequently performed cosmetic surgical procedure in Montreal, Quebec and across Canada each year. Every year, hundreds of thousands of women undergo breast augmentation to enjoy a fuller cup size, better contour and breast size and shape that is in balance with their individual body. Dr. Edouard Coeugniet is pleased to be one of Montreal’s most in-demand breast surgeons.
Women choose breast implants for a variety of reasons:
Breast augmentation or sometimes called a boob job is a procedure that resizes the breasts for a larger and/or fuller appearance. This procedure is also often called augmentation mammoplasty or breast implant surgery. By inserting an implant into each breast, your breasts can be increased by one or more bra cup sizes.

Breast augmentation involves the creation of an incision in the breast to place the breast implant of your choice. In cases of breast augmentation with fat transfer, fat is collected from another area of the body and injected into the breasts. Each breast augmentation procedure is personalized to the patient to ensure optimal results.
We know that every woman is unique in both her desires and her body shape. With that in mind, Dr. Edouard Coeugniet will take the time during the pre-operative consultation to learn what each woman hopes to gain from breast augmentation surgery and to decide which implant type and implant placement are best. In this way, every one of our patients enjoys a completely customized treatment designed with her specific goals in mind.

The world of breast implants offers a variety of options for patients seeking a more enhanced and confident appearance. There are two basic types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Both are approved by Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and both have proven effective at bringing patients successful breast augmentation results.
“ 2 of the most common implant types are Saline Breast Implants and Silicone Breast Implants, each with their unique advantages and characteristics”
Saline breast implants are the most common type used in breast enlargement surgery. They are composed of a silicone outer shell, and are filled with a sterile salt-water solution. Saline breast implants are not pre-filled before insertion – they are empty once placed into the breast pocket and then filled later during the procedure. This is advantageous in that the incision made for placement is often smaller for saline breast implants, which typically results in less scarring. One disadvantage of saline implants is they can cause the appearance of rippling under the breast in some cases. Some patients have also experienced capsular contracture, a condition characterized by scar tissue forming around the implant and giving the area a hardened feel.
Silicone implants are made of a silicone outer shell containing a silicone gel. This type of breast implant can often feel more natural than its saline counterpart, and there are less instances of rippling with silicone implants. However, silicone implants typically require a larger incision for placement. Also, if the implant ruptures, it is less noticeable and less easily absorbed by the body than with saline implants. Patients who have silicone breast implants should have their breasts checked regularly to make sure they are functioning properly, and should not hesitate to call their doctor if they feel something may be wrong with the implant.
Breast augmentation Surgery:
Be sure it’s the decision for you. The best way to do this is to book a consultation appointment and ask plenty of questions. Express your concerns and any fears you may have. If you decide breast augmentation is right for you, have realistic expectations about your results. Your life will be different as you recover, and your results will take some getting used to. The vast majority of patients, however, are extremely happy with their decision to get breast augmentation surgery.
Implants are measured in cubic centimeters (abbreviated as “cc”). The higher the number of ccs, the larger the implant. The average breast implant size is around 350 cc.
In most cases, breasts feel different after breast implant surgery. How different they feel will depend on whether you chose silicone or saline implants and what size and placement you decided upon. Generally speaking, silicone gel implants feel more natural than saline implants, and fat transfer augmentation will feel the most natural.
The benefits of breast augmentation include an enhanced physical appearance, more comfort in your own skin, looking better in clothing, and boosted self-confidence. Breast augmentation results are also long-lasting. On the flip side, as with any surgery, breast augmentation does require some downtime for recovery. There is also always the risk of complications during and after surgery, and rarely, some patients will be unhappy with their results and will choose to undergo breast implant removal or revision surgery.
The process of a breast implant settling, is commonly referred to as the "drop and fluff." After surgery the implants initially sit high on the chest and settle over the course of 2-3 months. As the implants settle, the breast becomes more round and full at the bottom.
Most patients can expect to return to work and normal activities within a week, depending on the nature of their job. If your job involves physical labor or lifting, you may need to take additional time off and gradually ease back into strenuous activities.
Most surgeries create some degree of scarring, and breast augmentation is no different. Women receiving breast implants in Portland have several options for incision sites, including the armpit. Which incision you will have is dependent on factors such as implant placement and your own anatomy.
In most cases, your scars will not be visible in regular clothes or swimwear. Following your post-op instructions and practicing good sun protection habits will further diminish the long-term appearance of scars.
All surgeries carry inherent risks, such as infection, blood clots, and adverse reactions to the anesthetic. When performed by a properly trained, board-certified surgeon, these risks are minimized. There are some risks and complications that are specific to breast augmentation. You may have heard of capsular contracture, a condition that occurs when excessive scar tissue develops around the implant. Capsular contracture can cause the breasts to feel hard and uncomfortable.
Another potential complication is sometimes referred to as “bottoming out,” which occurs when an implant shifts lower than it was originally placed, resulting in a misshapen breast.
Though these complications are not life-threatening, they generally require additional surgery to correct them. Your doctor will ensure you are fully informed of your risk potential before you undergo your breast augmentation.
With proper care, the results of your breast augmentation can look beautiful for many years. However, breast implants are not permanent. Implant manufacturers assign implants an average “lifespan” of 15 years, though yours may vary depending on your lifestyle and other factors.
Getting a procedure is a tremendous personal investment. However, it is not a decision that should be made lightly or in a hurry. Rushing might influence you to choose the wrong shape or go too big, which may impair you from running, jumping, or performing certain physical activities with ease. Go too small, and you may feel underwhelmed with your new look.
