Regenerative Medicine Fat Grafting, sometimes referred to as lipofilling, involves harvesting fat from areas of the body where it’s not needed—such as the abdomen or thighs—and reintroducing it into the face to plump, smooth, and revitalize the skin. This technique uses the patient’s own adipose (fat) tissue, making it a biocompatible and lasting filler.
Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or autologous fat transfer, is the process of using a patient’s own fat to increase the volume of fat in another area of the body. Because autologous fat comes from the patient’s own body, the body will not reject it. It is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation and anti-aging procedure that restores subtle volume and a better shape to the face and body. The fat is extracted using a small liposuction cannula, then injected into the new part of the body using very small blunt tipped cannulas. The most common areas where fat is taken from are the stomach, thighs, and hips. Fat transfer is minimally invasive, and the recovery time is short.
Good candidates for facial fat transfer are typically seeking facial rejuvenation, enhanced volume, or correction of facial asymmetry. Ideally, candidates should have sufficient excess fat in donor areas to enable the fat grafting procedure.
Below are some common fat grafting procedures. Dr. Edouard Coeugniet will help you determine what procedure or combination of procedures are best for you based on your body type and aesthetic goals.
Face fat transfer involves a 3-step process. It begins with liposuction to collect excess fat from a donor area, such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips. Dr. Edouard Coeugniet then uses an advanced nano-fat purifying system to prepare the harvested fat for transfer.
After the fat is safely collected, Dr. Edouard Coeugniet uses a small cannula or syringe to meticulously place the purified fat into targeted facial areas requiring augmentation or rejuvenation. This precision ensures a smooth and natural-looking outcome.
Typically, after fat injection, there is minimal discomfort in the donor area from where fat is removed. Discoloration and swelling of the injected portions of the face area will generally improve over time to return to work and social activities. When more extensive fat grafting is performed recovery may be longer.
Fat injections are longer lasting than most other injectable fillers (such as Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, and Radiesse). Because fat is a natural substance, there is typically less reaction to the injected fat by the body. Injected fat has the potential to survive for many years in the new location. Survival of fat is greater in areas where there is limited movement (cheeks, back of hands) and tends to be less in areas where there is constant movement.
Advantages of facial fat grafting compared to fillers include:
