Male abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for men. It trims and improves the appearance of your abdominal region by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying (rectus) muscles to leave you with a more sculpted abdomen.
Like the traditional tummy tuck, the goal of a male tummy tuck is to remove excess skin and fat from the stomach to create a more toned look. Men often choose to have a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty surgery after weight gain that has caused excess fat and loose skin on the abdomen. During the procedure, an incision will be made along the lower abdomen below the belt line where the scar can be easily concealed. The excess tissue will be removed, and the abdominal muscles tightened to strengthen and tone them. Men will also choose to have skin etching to create the appearance of a “six-pack.”
It’s more than just a trend. The male tummy tuck is rapidly becoming a staple for men wanting to regain a youthful abdomen, boosting not just appearance but also confidence. The vast majority of men are now more open to cosmetic surgery to achieve their aesthetic goals.
There are a few differences between tummy tucks for men and women based on the different desired aesthetics of each gender. Men often choose to remove fat in a pattern that enhances their six-pack while women prefer a toned, flat stomach. The curved cut along the bikini line may also look feminine so a straight incision is often made for male tummy tuck surgery.
Abdominoplasty is an individualised procedure and may not be suitable for everyone. Dr Ed will discuss your suitability for the procedure during your consultation once he has assessed your condition and general health. You should be physically healthy and at a stable weight. You should also have realistic expectations about the outcome of the surgery. It is important to note that abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss. In addition, continued fluctuations in weight after the surgery can affect your results.
After your surgery, it is essential that an adult drives you home and stays with you for a few days. You are likely to be in pain after your procedure and Dr. Liland will prescribe pain medication. Swelling is an initial side effect of the procedure which can take months to fully reduce and so it is recommended that you wear a compression garment for the first few weeks following your surgery to help reduce swelling.
Yes, it is very common for a tummy tuck to be combined with additional procedures. It is also very often combined with liposuction in order to reduce excess pockets of stubborn fat. If Dr Ed does feel you would benefit from additional procedures based on your goals, a custom surgical plan will be developed. It should be noted that not all procedures can be performed at the same time. Some surgery combinations need to be undertaken in stages to give the body enough time to heal.
