Eyebrows are one of our most prominent and distinctive facial features. They frame our face, accentuate our eyes, and are key in how we communicate. A youthful and lifted brow makes an enormous difference to our appearance.
Due to age and/or genetics, you may develop wrinkle lines across your forehead, creases between your eyebrows, and sagging brows that hood your upper eyelids. These can have an effect on your facial expressions, causing you to look tired, worried, or angry at all times.
A brow-lift is a surgical procedure that is performed to lift and elevate the brow, returning it to a more youthful position. With age, the skin and muscles begin to sag and droop over the brow and eyes. A brow-lift physically lifts the skin and internal structures of the brow for a more refreshed, awake, and alert appearance. The procedure can be performed by making incisions behind the hairline or using a more minimally-invasive approach with an endoscope (tiny camera).
A brow lift can treat drooping eyebrows, wrinkles across the forehead, deep furrows between the eyebrows as well as sagging, drooping, angry, tired-looking eyes. Modern brow lift techniques used by Dr. Edouard Coeugniet can achieve results that look both beautiful and natural.
Due to the differences in the techniques used, the surgical process can vary, including the anesthesia used. Typically, general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation are used during a brow lift procedure. The incisions will be made where they can be hidden by the hair, and the size and location of the incision will depend on whether or not the endoscopic technique is used. This method requires smaller incisions, as the surgeon will gain visibility using a small camera mounted on a flexible tube.
Candidates for a brow-lift should be healthy adults who do not smoke and are not taking blood thinners. Patients should have drooping or sagging skin in the brow area that is disrupting the aesthetics of the face or overall vision. It is important for prospective patients to have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure—the goal of cosmetic surgery is improvement, not perfection. Only you and your plastic surgeon can determine your individual candidacy.
Ideal candidates for brow lift are individuals who have:
There are several incision techniques that can be used for brow lift. The approach Dr. Edouard Coeugnietuses largely depends on the patient’s hairline and the results they hope to achieve.
“ A brow-lift is a surgical procedure that is performed to lift and elevate the brow, returning it to a more youthful position. ”
This is for patients who have some outer drooping of the upper eyelids and brows but are happy with the central and inner brow. It has a shorter incision, faster recovery and can correct the area without creating a surprised or over elevated look.
Endoscopic lift involves creating a series of small incisions within the hairline. An endoscope (a thin tube with a small camera attached at the end) is inserted through the incisions and guides the surgeon when making modifications to the skin and underlying tissues. This approach often results in less scarring and quicker recovery.
A single incision is made following a headphone-like pattern, starting at about ear level and running across the top of the forehead and down the other side of the head. The incision is usually made well behind the hairline so that the scar isn’t visible.
Most brow lift procedures are performed with local anesthesia and light sleep sedation, but general anesthesia may also be an option. The length and placement of your incisions will be dependent on the type of brow lift you are having.
After your brow lift surgery, Dr. Couegniet and his plastic surgery team will provide you with specific post-operative instructions. It is important that patients follow these instructions with care to ensure the recovery period goes smoothly and patients achieve their desired results.
Many patients that come into our office seeking to improve the forehead area are concerned about potential scarring. When done correctly, this fear is generally unfounded. In most cases, a brow lift will leave you with little to no visible scarring. A brow lift might be right for you if you’re bothered by loose, sagging skin and/or wrinkles on the upper portion of the face.
The short answer is yes. As with any surgical procedure, there will be post-surgical scarring. The good news is that with a brow lift, visible scarring will be minimal due to well-hidden incisions. You may see pink or raised scars for several months at or behind the hairline following your surgery. Over time, scars will gradually fade and likely only be noticeable to you.
That’s a decision only you can make. However, if scarring is your biggest concern when it comes to brow lift procedures, your fears may be unfounded. The majority of brow lift patients find the limited scars associated with the procedure to be well worth the benefits. One of our board-certified surgeons will be available to answer any questions you may have at the time of your in-person consultation.
The recovery process varies depending on the brow lift technique used: open, endoscopic, or limited incision. Regardless of which route you choose, be sure to set aside 2-3 weeks for a complete recovery. Typically, the outcome of a brow lift is a markedly more youthful and rested appearance in the forehead and upper eyelid region.
BROW LIFT TRANSFORMATIONS
Getting a procedure is a tremendous personal investment. However, it is not a decision that should be made lightly or in a hurry. Rushing might influence you to choose the wrong shape or go too big, which may impair you from running, jumping, or performing certain physical activities with ease. Go too small, and you may feel underwhelmed with your new look.
